Over 100,000 Jobs Created from the U.S. Marijuana Industry

Cannabis Jobs

The latest projected number of marijuana industry workers nationwide is between 100,000 and 150,000. The estimate comes from people employed at retail and medical marijuana dispensaries, concentrate manufacturers, testing labs, ancillary firms, and cultivation operations.

The industry has seen rapid growth since 2009 when many marijuana businesses were permitted to operate legally, Marijuana Business Daily reports. Those employed in the marijuana industry hold both full and part-time positions. The estimated number of employees industry-wide comes from taking data from the estimated number of marijuana businesses and average number of employees each business has.

In reference to the number of employees in different industries, the marijuana industry compares closely to the number of flight attendants, web developers, or librarians the country has in their respective industries.

Of those employed in the marijuana industry, it is said that between 58,000 and 88,000 work in parts of the industry where workers come into contact with marijuana.

As more states legalize medical and recreational marijuana across the country, the industry will create many more jobs. The job creation rate in the marijuana industry is one of the fastest growing in the United States.
