Michigan Communities Prepare for Medical Marijuana

Almost 100 community leaders from throughout Michigan learned about the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (March 26, 2010) at a Michigan Municipal League (MML) workshop in Lansing. The law’s been in effect since December 2008 but questions still remain about how it will impact local governments.
Event speakers weighed the possible economic benefits of the Act with the discussion centering on the right to farm marijuana , dispensaries and zoning. Several communities such as Garden City, Livonia, Niles and Roseville have already developed ordinances to deal with the law’s zoning and farming implications.
Workshop attendees—elected and appointed officials, public safety officers and municipal attorneys—agreed the seminar was helpful.
