Officers with the Arcata
Police Department’s Special Services Unit seized nearly 4 pounds of
processed marijuana Wednesday, along with snakes, reptiles and venomous
spiders, according to a press release from APD.

A pair of
search warrants were served that day, both in response to neighborhood
complaints about ongoing drug activity. The first search warrant,
executed on the 2500 block of McDowell Court, yielded an indoor growing
operation that officers determined to be in compliance with Prop. 215

The second warrant, served on the 1700 block of
Roberts Way, resulted in the discovery of an illegal indoor growing
operation, according to the release, where officers seized nearly 4
pounds of marijuana, 100 mature plants, almost a pound of concentrated
cannabis, a semi-automatic rifle and numerous cultivation supplies.
Personnel with the Arcata Fire Department responded as well, which
officers deemed a risk because of the explosive material used to create
concentrated cannabis, or hash.

In addition, officers reported
finding “a large number of snakes, reptiles and spiders, some of which
were venomous, that were being kept as pets at the residence.” The
California Department of Fish and Game responded to the residence as
well, according to the release, and will be conducting a follow-up

No one was home at the time, and no arrests were
made Wednesday. Building inspectors with the city of Arcata discovered
multiple building code violations at both homes, according to the release, prompting officials to cancel electrical service.
