The voter-approved Initiative 502 in Washington will commence on December 6, 2012. At that time, it will be legal for adults over 21 years of age to either possess up to an ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of marijuana-infused edibles (such as, cookies, brownies, candies), or 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquids (such as, drinks, tinctures, and oils).

Washington is implementing these provisional rules for a year – until it creates the actual rules for I-502. The rules-to-be are going to consist of a licensing system for marijuana production and sale in the state. Until the I-502 rules are implemented in late 2013, the new makeshift rules and the present Washington medical marijuana laws will remain the same.

As for anyone under the age of 21, being caught with marijuana by police will carry similar charges as being caught drinking under age.
