Kush refers to a strain of marijuana, which originates in Afghanistan, North Pakistan and North Western India.
Kush is a subset of the genus species Cannabis Indica. The 500 mile Kush mountain range runs along the borders of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. The highest point of the Hindu Kush, called the Kushan Pass is more than 25,000 feet above sea level and was once the center of the Kushan Empire in the 1st century BC.
Strains of this ancient wonder were brought to the US in the 1970’s and are quite available to this day. In fact, as recently as 1998 a British biopharmaceutical company, GW Pharmaceuticals, obtained the only cultivation license in the UK to conduct medicinal research of the Kush marijuana plant. Nabiximols, trade name Sativex is patented as a treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) because it alleviates nerve pain, spasms, overactive bladder as well as other benefits. You could say this ancient plant definitely helps “Kush” the pain.
Since 2012, after partnering with Bayer AG, GW Pharmaceuticals has had an estimated marijuana production of 100 tons a year. Apparently Kush does more than alleviate pain and help heal patients, it’s also creating quite a “Kushion” in Big Pharma’s wallet too. Ironic how what’s good for government protected corporations is illegal for the rest of us, isn’t it?
