Mark Cardenas
Weeks after Proposition 205 narrowly failed to legalize recreational marijuana in Arizona, Arizona congressman Rep. Mark Cardenas (D-Dist. 19) has introduced a bill that would legalize marijuana.

Cardenas said “[Legislators] that will actually vote no, I’ve had come up to me and say, ‘you know we should just legalize it and tax it, but I can’t do it because I’ll risk a backlash of my constituents,'” 12 News reports.

Cardenas introduced the same legalization bill about year ago, but it died before being assigned to a committee. But this time, he believes he will get support for the bill based on the massive support from Prop 205 voters.

If a majority of state legislatures vote for Cardenas’ bill, Arizona would legalize adult-use marijuana.

⚡️

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
