85% Support for Nationwide Medical Marijuana Legalization, Poll Finds

A recent HealthDay/Harris Poll’s results indicate that Americans show strong support for medical marijuana with roughly 85% support.

The poll also shows 57% support for recreational marijuana legalization, according to HealthDay. Four out of five respondents agree that medical marijuana should be treated like any other medication – including its regulation.

Paul Armentano of NORML said, “Voters believe that ending America’s failed marijuana prohibition law is a common sense issue, not a partisan one. It’s time for their elected officials to take a similar posture, and to move expeditiously to amend federal law in a manner that comports with public and scientific consensus, as well as with marijuana’s rapidly changing cultural and legal status.”

Those that do not support legal medical marijuana raised concerns about safety, with 57% stating that the medicine getting into the hands of children.

Deana Percassi of Harris Poll said, “Opposition to marijuana – whether for medical or recreational use – comes down to fear of it getting into the wrong hands.”

69% of the respondents agree that the benefits of medical marijuana outweigh the risks. A similar response was recorded for those that agree that marijuana should be seen as a natural medicine.

Younger adults, ages 18-34, showed more support for recreational support. In that age group, 67% support recreational legalization. In the 35-44 age group, 68% support recreational legalization. The numbers decline as the age groups get older. The least support is among those ages 65 and older, showing only 38% support. 57% of those ages 55 to 64 support recreational legalization.

Percassi said, “Marijuana is seen as a way to ease the opioid crisis and even prevent opioid-related deaths.”

Early data and studies in legal marijuana states shows reduced numbers of emergency room visits and lower opioid overdose rates.
