Alcohol harms the brain more than marijuana, according to new research.

Researchers at the University of Colorado-Boulder completed a review of existing imaging data looking at the effects of alcohol and marijuana on the human brain, according to WJXT4 News. They concluded that, unlike alcohol, marijuana doesn’t affect the size or integrity of white or gray matter in the human brain, even after years of being exposed to marijuana.

Study author, Professor Kent Hutchison, said, “While marijuana may also have some negative consequences, it definitely is nowhere near the negative consequences of alcohol.”

The scientists added that research into marijuana’s potential mental effects remain very limited, but hopefully more research will be conducted in the future.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
