Cannabis Cup Denied Permit for 4/20 Event in Denver

High Times’s Cannabis Cup planned for its annual event in Denver to run from April 16 – 20. But Adams County commissioners rejected the permit for the event. Testimony was received from local law enforcement officials, which played a significant role in the permit’s denial, reports The Denver Post.

The denial came in a unanimous vote. The main concern is the number of attendants and safety concerns. Local law enforcement officials found during the 2015 festivities that the number of people openly consuming cannabis was an issue.

Adams County Sheriff, Michael McIntosh, said, “From a safety perspective, I have serious concerns about this event and this venue.”

In the permit application, Denver Mart listed the daily cap of attendees at 15,000. Last year’s numbers show the average daily attendance at 35,000, exceeding the attendance cap in the new permit application.

Denver Mart had plans in place for safer parking with off-site parking and a shuttle service. Fire officials argued that the projected number of daily attendees, with a 15,000 person cap, is a safe number of bodies for the space the event would have been held in.

High Times has not yet released a comment in regards to the event.
