A bipartisan bill was introduced to the House that would reschedule marijuana as a Schedule III substance. If Congress passes this legislation, marijuana would be in the same category as anabolic steroids and Vicodin, making it much easier for researchers to study the drug.

The lawmakers argue that marijuana belongs in a category where it has “a potential for abuse less than substances in Schedules I or II and abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence,” according to The Washington Times.

The current Schedule I substance status of marijuana deems it as having no accepted medical use.

Twenty-nine states and Washington D.C. have pro-marijuana laws — either medical and/or recreational.

No details regarding a hearing or voting date on the bill have been released.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
