The Greek government has legalized medical marijuana use. Doctors will soon be able to prescribe the drug.
Greece is the sixth European Union country to legalize marijuana use, according to Independent. The Czech Republic, Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain have already legalized medical marijuana use.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said, “It is an important initiative that will have a positive effect, both for its medicinal use and within the field of investments.”
Prime Minister Tsipras was a chief backer of the initiative. Lawmakers and experts also defended the national production of medical marijuana. They claim that it will have a positive impact on the country’s economy, including in secondary economies.
Greece is very strict when it comes to recreational marijuana, having some of the strictest laws in the European Union. In Greece, there is no distinguishing between soft and hard drugs. Courts decide punishments, which in the case of any drug, often results in a jail sentence.
