Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is up for re-election and is expected to support a bill to create a recreational marijuana law. The legislation would allow home cultivation in small amounts and legalize the public use of marijuana.

The public consumption section of the law would allow marijuana use in any public area that also allows tobacco use, Times of Israel reported. Each household would also be permitted a single planter with 15 marijuana seeds to be grown at home.

Lawmaker Sharren Haskel said, “This was a promise [by Likud] in the last elections, and it’s something we have to deliver for our public.”

Netanyahu is said to have made a legalization promise during his re-election campaign. Over the next two weeks, the bill is expected to see a lot of action as it will require votes from several committees as well as discussions between lawmakers.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
