Marijuana Ads on California Highways Could Disappear

There have already been billboards pushing Tommy Chong’s brand, Chong’s Choice, on Highway 50 in California, but a new bill—Assembly Bill 64—will make it illegal to advertise marijuana products on California highways.

The only provision regarding billboards in Prop 64 bans marijuana billboards from being on state borders entering California, according to The Cannifornian. The new ban, if passed, will prohibit such advertisements everywhere on California state highways and interstates.

The efforts are to prevent minors from seeing advertisements for marijuana, according to Assemblyman Rob Bonta. He said, “We have legal adult use and medical use, and we want to make sure that advertising hits the target audience as much as possible and doesn’t slip beyond that. We want to target adults and patients and not the broader audience that includes kids and carpools and school buses and families.”

Assemblyman Ken Cooley said, “These aren’t actually people holding licenses. I think there is just an aggressive effort to communicate to people about their products and maybe build their brand.”

Another element to Assembly Bill 64 would create additional licenses for marijuana production facilities, packing centers, and warehouses to apply for dispensary licenses. This would allow them to offer delivery services using a state monitored “track and trace” system.
