According to data by the think-tank Data for Progress, a vast majority of Democratic voters support legalizing marijuana.

The national poll surveyed registered Democrats likely to vote in the 2020 primaries, NORML reported.

Of the surveyed respondents, “80% of Democratic voters support federal marijuana legalization, and just 14% oppose it.”

Support was highest among Caucasian voters (85%) and lowest among African Americans (67%).

“Democratic voters overwhelmingly support legalizing marijuana, fixing the justice system to account for legalization, and for granting restitution to the American families and communities harmed by the War on Drugs,” Data for Progress noted.

Support was at 90% for overturning convictions of prisoners incarcerated for cannabis-related crimes in states that have since legalized cannabis.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
