Marijuana Polls MPP

A new Quinnipiac poll shows that 71 percent (5 out of 7) of Americans oppose the federal prohibition of marijuana. The poll also found that 93 percent of Americans support legalizing medical marijuana and 59 percent support legalizing recreational marijuana.

Americans think that the federal government should respect state’s rights and state marijuana laws, according to Marijuana Policy Project (MPP). The poll included members of all age groups and political affiliations.

Mason Tvert of MPP said, “Americans of all ages and political persuasions can agree that the federal government has no business interfering in state marijuana laws. People do not want federal prohibition laws to be enforced in states that have rejected them. There appears to be near universal support for allowing the use of medical marijuana, and the majority in favor of broader reform is growing quickly. Our country might be divided on some issues, but more and more it is looking like marijuana policy is not one of them.”

Tvert also said, “President Trump said throughout his campaign that he supported states’ rights to determine their own marijuana policies. We are hopeful that he will maintain that position, which is clearly in line with the majority of Americans. It appears the administration would face strong criticism from both sides of the aisle and most people in between if it attempted to interfere in states’ marijuana laws.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
