In Colorado, police dogs are being trained to ignore the scent of marijuana. Several departments throughout the state will partake in the retraining program. Older canines that are already trained to detect marijuana are expected to be phased out of service.
Officer Garrett Duncan has worked with his canine partner, Tulo, for a decade, according to KPRC2. He said, “We’re just not going to train them with marijuana, so they won’t know the odor. They won’t have any reason to indicate or tell us there is marijuana around because they won’t know.”
It isn’t clear when exactly Colorado police departments plan to start phasing out older canines for the younger, marijuana-ignoring canine officers.
