Beer Marijuana

In a recent report, researchers found that roughly one quarter of the nation’s beer drinkers claim they have switched from beer to marijuana. The report surveyed 40,000 American beer drinkers, and about 27-percent of them are legally purchasing marijuana instead of beer, or suggested they would if it were legal in their state.

If the switch were to happen, the beer industry could lose another $2 billion or more annually, according to The Times-Picayune. The marijuana market would take 7-percent more sales away from the beer industry.

The beer market would still make more annual sales than the marijuana market, by double. Should the United States legalize marijuana nationally, those sales figures could easily switch places. The unknowns of the marijuana industry have beer companies worrying.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
