Survey: “50% of Americans Say Recreational Marijuana Should Be Legalized”

In a new YouGov RealTime survey, 72% of respondents say that medical marijuana should be legal nationally, and 50% say recreational marijuana should be. The survey also found that 62% of respondents believe that marijuana will be federally legalized within the next decade.

Women are more interested in CBD than men, according to the survey. The survey found that 1 in 5 Americans are already using some kind of CBD product, and 40% are interested in CBD-infused products like bath soaks and lotions. Parents with adolescent children are 50% more likely to consume CBD edibles.

Even non-marijuana users support legalization of both recreational and medical marijuana. Their support of national medical marijuana legalization was 93% and recreational legalization was at 86% for this group.

The survey also explored the overall attitude toward marijuana. It found that 52% believe alcohol is more dangerous. Millennials support this statement by 59% and other age groups support it by 87%.

The survey included responses from 1,269 American adults ages 18 and older and was conducted between April 5th and 8th, 2019.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
