Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is mainly seen in heavier marijuana users. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain and severe nausea. A recent study indicated that persons who use marijuana at least 20 days a month and in heavier doses are more likely to experience CHS than light users. The study concluded that about one-third of heavy marijuana users have experienced the illness.
While it’s unknown how or why the condition surfaces, according to New York Times, there may be a simple resolution to relieving its symptoms: a really hot shower. The stimulation from a hot shower seems to produce a different kind of sensory signal to offset or reset the pain signal. The pain system can be altered over a long period of heavy use of cannabinoids as changes in the nervous system and brain occur.
Dr. Kennon Heard of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital said, “Something in the pain system is disturbed by having THC around all the time.”
CHS is not a life-threatening ailment, but can certainly cause discomfort. Dr. Heard believes that those experiencing these symptoms don’t need to visit a doctor or emergency room, but to take a very hot shower and reduce marijuana consumption.
For those that have more severe or recurring cases of CHS, taking a break from marijuana altogether is suggested. This will reduce the consumer’s tolerance so that, in the future, smaller doses are suitable.
