The Arizona Department of Health Services’ (ADHS) annual medical marijuana program report shows that Arizona patients bought nearly 106 tons (211,556 lbs) of medical marijuana in 2020.

  • Marijuana flower: 188,869 lbs (3,021,906 ounces)
  • Marijuana edibles: 4,981 lbs
  • Other marijuana: 17,705 lbs

“Consider, that’s the equivalent of about 423,000 eight-ounce bags of Cheetos,” Howard Fischer noted via Tucson.com. “Or for those whose culinary hankerings are less salt-inclined, it’s nearly 2.2 million regular-size Hershey bars and almost 2.5 million packages of Twinkies.”

There were 295,295 active medical marijuana cardholders in 2020. Maricopa county had the vast majority of those cardholders.

  • Maricopa County: 196,397
  • Pima County: 39,490
  • Pinal County: 17,602
  • Yavapai County: 12,268
  • Coconino County: 6,220
  • Mohave County: 6,176

If “an ounce of average weed goes for $200 — and there’s a whole lot of variables there — that’s more than $675 million expended in 2020 on medical marijuana,” Fischer stated.

Arizona Lawyer Explains New Recreational Marijuana Limits

⚡️

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
