Flower

Move over roses! A different type of “flower” may be taking over Valentine’s Day. Data from a recent online survey conducted by Wired Research found that 3 in 5 (61%) American adults ages 21 and over — or nearly 148 million individuals — plan to incorporate cannabis into their Valentine’s Day plans, either by using it or giving it as a gift.

The survey, commissioned by Verano, a multi-state cannabis company that operates Zen Leaf dispensaries in Arizona, found that attitudes and purchasing behaviors towards cannabis are shifting in the U.S., with more interest, acceptance and personal cannabis usage leading the way. Data from the survey suggests the traditional Valentine’s Day gifts of flowers and chocolates may see real competition with close to 2 in 5 (37%, or close to 55 million) American adults stating they would be happy to receive cannabis as a gift this Valentine’s Day.

Notable results from the study:

– Men are more likely than women (66% vs. 57%) to incorporate cannabis into Valentine’s Day plans.
– Gen Z and Millennials are significantly more likely than Gen X and Boomers to include cannabis in their Valentine’s Day plans (70% vs. 57%).
– One of the more surprising statistics found that American adult parents were significantly more likely than their peers without children (69% vs. 57%) to consider making cannabis a part of their Valentine’s Day celebration this year.

The overall findings of the survey show a significant shift in American adults’ attitudes towards cannabis, signaling a reduction in stigma and increased acceptance of cannabis use.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
