Marijuana has gone mainstream in the United States.

Daily or near-daily cannabis use has surpassed daily alcohol use in America, reaching roughly 21.4 million daily users compared to roughly 17.2 million daily/frequent alcohol consumers.

New data from the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), reveals that daily cannabis users outnumber the 19.9 million Americans who smoke cigarettes and the 17.2 million who drink alcohol.

Alcohol and tobacco consumption have been plummeting lately, both being down approximately 25% since 2021. Meanwhile daily marijuana use, which includes flower and edibles, surged nearly 21% since 2021.

The study revealed that daily weed use has accelerated rapidly among Americans aged 26 and over. Many people are swapping alcohol for cannabis to avoid hangovers and seniors are swapping pharmaceutical drugs for cannabis to avoid the side effects.

State-mandated warning:

Do not use marijuana if you are under twenty-one years of age or pregnant. Keep marijuana out of reach of children.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
