Arizona Medical Marijuana Sales Skyrocket to $390 Million

Marijuana sales at Arizona dispensaries skyrocketed from 1,386,198 ounces of marijuana sold in 2017 to 1,950,652 ounces in 2018, an increase of 564,454 ounces (40.7%). If, for example, an average ounce sells for $200 in Arizona, then dispensaries sold approximately $390 million over the year.

Marijuana flower was by-far the most popular product sold at dispensaries, making up 1,789,294 ounces (111,830 pounds) of the 1,950,652 ounces sold in 2018.

In 2018, the Arizona Department of Health Services received 200,060 patient applications. At $150 per application, the ADHS made approximately $30 million. (A very small percentage of applications were at the reduced rate of $75 for persons on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.)

Arizona charges a 5.6% sales tax on medical marijuana sales. At an estimated $390 million in sales in 2018, the state earned over $22 million in tax revenue.

Last year, 59.97% of Arizona’s medical marijuana patients were male while 40.03% were female. Of all patients in the state, 87.69% received a medical marijuana card for chronic pain.

18 to 30 year olds made up the largest demographic of Arizona medical marijuana patients at 26.08%, with the second largest group being 31 to 40 year olds at 20.68% and then 51 to 60 year olds at 16.15%.

Fridays tend to have the most sales at dispensaries.
