Arizona medical marijuana patients helped the state set a new sales record in 2017: Sales have increased 56% from 2016, and more than 43 tons of medical marijuana were sold in comparison to 2016’s 29 tons.

At the end of 2017, Arizona had 153,000 registered medical marijuana patients, an increase of 34% from 2016, according to Phoenix New Times.

Since the implementation of the medical marijuana program in 2010, dispensary sales numbers have risen 1,620%.

Estimates indicate that treasury offices at the state and local level gained between $31 and $37 million in additional tax revenue last year. This only accounts for the taxes generated from sales, not from the multiple other aspects of the medical marijuana industry.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
