The City of Glendale has approved an ordinance that would not only allow Glendale medical marijuana dispensaries to stay open for longer hours, but they’ll also be able to have larger stores.

The new square footage allowed for Glendale dispensaries is permitted to increase to 6,000-sqft, tripling the current space permitted, according to 12 News. The new ordinance also allows dispensaries to be open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Demitri Downing of the Arizona Marijuana Industry Trade Association said, “Improvement in medical marijuana ordinance means improvement in access to patients and an improvement of the medical marijuana program for the state of Arizona.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
