In a Barbara Walters interview, President Obama–finally–answers questions regarding marijuana legalization in America. Obama states that he is against the legalization of marijuana, but that the federal government doesn’t intend on focusing on individual marijuana users.

Obama’s stance on marijuana legalization seems to have taken a backseat in his agenda. Obama told Barbara Walters, “We’ve got bigger fish to fry. It would not make sense for us to see a top priority as going after recreational users in states that have determined that it’s legal” and “What I think is, that at this point, in Washington and Colorado, you’ve seen the voters speak on this issue.”

But as California dispensaries know all too well, politicians are two-sided these days, especially when it comes to marijuana discrimination and enforcement. For now, it looks like medical marijuana and marijuana legalization are back-burners on the President’s agenda.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
