Tucson Dispensary

The Tucson City Council is meeting this week and will discuss four proposed changes for medical marijuana dispensaries operating in Tucson.

The four proposed changes are:

– Capping the total amount of dispensaries in Tucson
– Increasing the size of cultivation locations in Tucson
– Allowing outdoor medical marijuana cultivation
– Altering restrictions on dispensary size and proximity to schools and churches

Currently, Tucson dispensaries cannot be located with in 1,000 feet of schools and churches, but the Tucson City Council could reduce the distance to 500 feet, reports KVOA.

“It would be nice to have some support from the City Council in allowing us to maintain our CHAA and not let other dispensaries or other groups move in. We’re 1,600 square feet right now. Obviously, if they’re going to let us go to 4,000, the amount of patients that we’re able to help everyday, we would be able to double, potentially triple that by having more space,” said a Tucson dispensary employee.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
