Colorado has created a successful medical marijuana industry that is quickly revitalizing the state’s revenue. In Denver alone there are approximately 204 medical marijuana dispensaries that facilitate tens-of-thousands of patients. And with each dispensary comes real estate leases, employees, electricity, utility, insurance, HVAC, security, and many other ancillary services. The taxed medical marijuana industry, much like the alcohol industry, has helped Colorado’s revenue increase roughly $20 million.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
