California Marijuana Legalization Campaign

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act campaign in California has been collecting petition signatures in an effort to get their recreational marijuana initiative onto November’s election ballot. The campaign says that it has enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot, but still must receive formal certification from state elections officials

Former Facebook president Sean Parker and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom are both supporters of the campaign.

According to the campaign, they have gathered 600,000 signatures, which far surpasses the 365,000 required signatures, the Daily News reported. The deadline to collect signatures was set for July 5th. The dominating amount of support for legal recreational marijuana in California has helped the coalition reach their goal far ahead of its deadline.

If the initiative is passed in November, it will allow adults 21 or older to purchase marijuana for recreational use. A flat 15-percent tax will be on all purchases. The law would also allow those 21 and older to grow up to 6 plants for personal use and possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana and/or marijuana-based products.

A recent poll by Probolsky Research found that nearly 60 percent of Californians support marijuana legalization and would vote yes for such a ballot initiative.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
