On January 1, 2018, California will legalize the sale, use and possession of recreational marijuana for adults. Below is an overview to California’s new law, Proposition 64.

Age Limit

Anyone 21 or older can purchase and consume marijuana when in California.

Residency Limit

California visitors and residents that are 21 or older can purchase and consume marijuana when in California.

Purchase and Possession Limits

Adults can purchase and possess up to one ounce (28.4 grams) of marijuana for personal use from any state-licensed California dispensary.

Consumption Limit

Like Colorado, California has strict marijuana consumption laws. Consuming marijuana should be done at a private residence. Consuming marijuana on the beach, at hotels and in public is illegal.

Transportation Limit

Marijuana cannot be transported across state lines.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
