Cannabis Migraine

According to a new study, 94% of migraine sufferers experienced symptom relief within two hours of inhaling marijuana.

Researchers affiliated with the University of New Mexico studied the effects of marijuana inhalation on 699 migraine sufferers for 32 months, NORML reported. The participants self-administered marijuana and then reported symptom changes via a mobile app.

“According to the current results, cannabis flower appears to be effective at reducing headache- and migraine-related pain intensity for most people that choose to use it,” the study noted.

Chronic pain, such as migraines and headaches, is a popular qualifying health condition for many medical marijuana patients.

Data presented at the American Headache Society this year also reported that marijuana therapy reduced patients’ use of anti-migraine medications and alleviated some sleep and anxiety issues.

“It seems possible that the use of cannabis flower, combined with other behavioral modifications, might offer some patients a natural, safer and more effective treatment regimen, compared to the use of some conventional prescription pharmaceuticals,” the study concluded.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
