‘Microdosing’ Is the Future of Marijuana-Infused Products

Edibles available in smaller doses of marijuana are gaining interest among consumers. Annually, the national marijuana market generates $5.4 billion in sales, and edibles companies want a “piece of the pie.”

A group of panelists at the recent New West Summit event in San Francisco agree that “microdosed” edibles are a fast rising sector in the marijuana industry, Business Insider reports. Most of the edibles produced contain between 5 to 10 milligrams of THC each, an ideal dose for new users.

Many consumers prefer to break or cut their edibles into multiple pieces to prevent an unpleasant high that is too strong for their comfort level. If you ingest an edible that is too potent, you may experience feelings of anxiety or an increased heart rate.

Kiva Confections COO, Kristi Knoblich said, “Patients are a little bit scared of edibles.” Kiva Confections creates chocolate bars that range from 15 to 45 milligrams each. The bars do come with impressions on them to help divide the bars into smaller doses.

Smaller dosed edibles are ideal for casual edible consumption. Knoblich said, “It’s that person looking for a glass of wine or beer in the evening [type] experience. We’re looking for that person who isn’t looking to get blasted.”

Other edibles companies, such as Defonce Chocolatier, is also making microdosed edibles. One of the products made by this manufacturer contains 180 milligrams of THC, but is intended to be broken into 18, 10-milligram doses.

The benefit of the smaller doses, according to Knoblich, is to allow people to gauge their tolerance and medicate a little at a time. If a person doesn’t feel enough relief within a couple of hours of the first dose, they can try another dose.
