NFL Approves New Rule to Allow Players to Use Marijuana

NFL Marijuana Rules

The NFL Players Association has approved a new agreement with NFL team owners that will create a 17-game regular season, expand teams in the playoffs, and allow marijuana use among players.

“The new deal eliminates the possibility of a player being suspended for a positive test for marijuana,” the Washington Post reported. “A player can be suspended for marijuana only under extreme circumstances, such as a fraudulent test or an agreement by doctors that a player is a habitual user who is at risk and needs time off the field.”

The NFL playoffs will be expanded from 12 to 14 teams starting in the 2020 season and the regular season will expand from 16 to 17 games by 2023, but possibly as soon as the 2021 season. However, coronavirus (COVID-19) could impact the 2020-2021 season, so the regular season extension will likely come in 2022 or 2023.
