Legalization

According to two new public opinion polls, over 60% of Americans support the legalization of marijuana nationwide.

The poll by NPR/PBS and the Marist Institute for Public Opinion found that 62% of Americans think that “legalizing marijuana nationally” is a “good idea,” NORML reported.

The Fox News poll found that 63% of respondents are in favor of “legalizing the recreational use of marijuana on a national level.”

“This holiday season, Americans are more likely than ever to agree in favor of legalizing marijuana when the topic comes up at the dinner table,” NORML stated. “With a public majority mandate, now is our time to demand an end to prohibition in advance of the 2020 elections.”

The results from these polls are consistent with other polls, such as the ones by Gallup and Pew, which show Americans’ support for legalizing cannabis to be greater than 60%.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
