Brain Cancer

Marijuana destroys brain cancer cells in petri dish studies, so Australian researchers have decided to conduct a human study. The researchers will be taking on as many as 82 patients with active glioma, a type of brain tumor.

Glioma tumors are difficult to treat, The Australian noted.  But the researchers hope to find that marijuana will slow or stop the tumor growth.

The key investigator for the trial is neurosurgeon Michael Sughrue, said, “We know our drugs work on some, but not all of them. So we need more bullets in our gun essentially.”

Glioma tumors are especially difficult to treat because they typically contain 100 different types of cancer cells, said Sughrue.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
