Job Testing

According to new data by Simply Hired, more U.S. businesses are abandoning cannabis drug testing or cutting back on their testing frequency.

55% of hiring managers surveyed stated that their business doesn’t test current employees for off-the-clock marijuana consumption, NORML reported.

As for hiring managers who work for a business that does test for marijuana, 40% stated that “they do it less often than in the past.”

Businesses with 1,000 or more employees were found to be much more likely to conduct pre-employment testing for marijuana than smaller businesses.

Almost 70% of hiring managers claimed their company would be “okay” with an employee using marijuana while off-the-clock “as long as the company remains unaware of it.”

Of the employees surveyed, 75% believe that testing positive for cannabis shouldn’t lead to an automatic termination of employment.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
