Win Medical Marijuana Arguments by Citing These 4 Studies

Marijuana Senior Medicine

Many people still believe marijuana has no medicinal value although science is catching up to what has been known for hundreds of years: marijuana has medicinal properties.

Win marijuana-related discussions with your friends and family this holiday season by citing the scientific studies noted below.

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system that regulates mood, memory, pain and more. The system also makes cannabinoids naturally within the body. Cannabinoids are also naturally-occurring substances found in marijuana. The body doesn’t always make enough cannabinoids on its own, or enough of the right type, so that’s one way in which marijuana becomes beneficial. In other words, humans are evolutionarily-wired for cannabinoids.

Marijuana Can Reduce Migraine Frequency and Severity

A study taking place from 2010 through 2014 indicates that marijuana is effective for treating migraines. The study included 120 adults that were diagnosed with migraine headaches and were recommended for a specific migraine treatment. The results showed that there was a migraine frequency reduction from 10.4 to 4.6 on average. Of the 120 participants, 39.7% reported positive results. Reduction in frequency of migraines entirely was reported by 19.8% of participants and getting complete relieve or total prevention was 11.6% of participants.

Participants preferred inhaled forms of medical marijuana to edibles.

Marijuana Helps Reduce Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

A study that began in October 2016 is ongoing but shows promise that medical marijuana is effective for reducing/treating pain associated with Parkinson’s disease. The study includes 20 people living with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s inhibits mobility as it progresses. Participants reported an increase in mobility and a reduction of pain. Motor skills were also improved.

This study remains open.

CBD Helps Reduce Seizure Frequency

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the predominant non-psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana. Several studies are ongoing and show that CBD helps reduce seizure frequency or completely prevents them in several forms of intractable epilepsy like Dravet Syndrome. Nearly one-third of epilepsy diagnoses are an intractable from, meaning that traditional medications may not be effective or are minimally effective.

An open study of 18-children with epilepsy shows that CBD is effective in treating some seizure disorders. There were no adverse side effects reported. All of the participants showed improvement. In one child specifically, no further trips to the ER for seizures were needed.

Multiple studies regarding the effectiveness of CBD for seizure disorders are ongoing globally with success being reported by all.

Medical Marijuana May Reduce Dementia Symptoms

Researchers are taking a look at how effective medical marijuana might be for those with dementia. Dementia can cause difficulty in cognitive function (inducing confusion), mood disorders and behavioral disorders. The study’s participants were given medical marijuana oil that included THC. Eleven patients started the 4-week trial with 10 completing the entire process. All 10 that completed the process showed significant improvement in terms of CGI score, decreasing from 6.5 to 5.7.

Participants also experienced decreased delusions, decreased irritability, better sleep, happier caregivers and less agitation and aggression.

Final Thoughts

Studies regarding medical marijuana are taking place around the world. Science is starting to get caught up but is still hindered because marijuana is still illegal in many places.

By citing some studies, it should let friends and family better understand that marijuana is a natural medicine and not the demonized drug the US government has made it out to be.
