The Colorado Health Department has set $2.4 million aside to use for marijuana-related research. The department is hiring researchers to help study marijuana. Grant applications are being accepted by the Retail Marijuana Health Monitoring Program. The funding for available grants comes from marijuana sales taxes.
The studies, according to The Denver Post, will be focused on “the health effects of marijuana use more generally across the state post-legalization.”
The studies of most interest include:
- Study of marijuana use during pregnancy
- Teen marijuana use decision making factors
- Mental and Physical health effects of higher THC percentages
- Differences in health outcomes between light and frequent marijuana users
Requirements for study consideration include:
- Successful grant-funded research/data analysis
- Scientists with hospital/university connections
- No for-profit studies may take place, but can partner with a non-profit for research purposes
Two types of grants will be offered. A pilot grant will be available with funding up to $100,000 per year for two years. The second grant is a full research grant. This will provide up to $300,000 per year for a maximum of three years.
Those wishing to conduct a research study should apply by July 22. A full application will be given to those that make the initial cut for completion by September 30. Grant approval notifications will be announced in November.
