WalletHub, a personal finance website, compared over 180 cities based upon 45 metrics in their “Best & Worst Places to Retire (2024)” report.

The report found that nine cities in Arizona were among the best in the country.

Arizona ranked cities:
Scottsdale: 6th
Tempe: 21st
Chandler: 66th
Tucson: 81st
Phoenix: 85th
Gilbert: 86th
Peoria: 88th
Mesa: 106th
Glendale: 118th

The top 5 cities, in order:
Orlando, FL
Miami, FL
Minneapolis, MN
Tampa, FL
Fort Lauderdale, FL

Cities were graded on a 100-point scale using four primary categories: affordability (25 possible points), activities (25 possible points), quality of life (25 possible points), and health care (25 possible points). Subcategories included taxpayer-friendliness, annual cost of in-home services, recreation and senior centers per capita, violent-crime rate, elderly-friendly labor market and family medicine physicians per 10,000 residents.

Four of the top retirement cities also made the list of “Most Weed-Friendly Cities“.

State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
