Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), the nation’s largest anti-marijuana organization, recently hosted a summit called “Taking Back 4/20.” Arizona Governor Doug Ducey spoke out against legalizing marijuana at the summit.

Governor Ducey was quite happy to publicly thank SAM for its support in defeating Prop 205 during his speech at the summit, reports Buzzfeed.  Ducey, who helped raise funds to fight Prop 205, said, “Fortunately, Arizona is a place where common sense can still work. We fought very hard and we won this round.”

“They have pop tarts that they label ‘pot tarts’ and they look identical,” said Ducey, in regards to what he “knows” will happen when a free market and innovation take over the marijuana industry.

Arizona was the only state with a recreational marijuana initiative on ballots last November to fail, and that’s something that Governor Ducey is quite proud of.

SAM started with just one man, Kevin Sabet. Since SAM’s beginnings in 2012, it’s become a 5-member team.

Sabet believes that because “there is a new administration, there is a clean slate in terms of where we’re going with this issue.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
