Ducey Marijuana

Arizona governor Doug Ducey isn’t shy about his anti-marijuana views.

In 2016, Ducey actively opposed efforts to legalize marijuana for adult use, and his negative opinion of cannabis appears to still be the same, which is why NORML gave him a “D” grade on their latest legislative report card. It is expected that Ducey will oppose this year’s legalization efforts.

Ducey did sign a bill into law which will help make medical marijuana safer for patients by implementing requirements for testing marijuana and a bill making medical marijuana cards valid for two years instead of one, thus saving patients money on their medical marijuana card. However, Ducey’s statements often still echo tones of Reefer Madness.

He’s been quoted saying things like, “I don’t think any state ever got stronger by being stoned.”

It’s disheartening to see a public servant, such as a governor, be so opposed and closed-minded to a plant that has been scientifically proven to have therapeutic benefits for numerous health conditions.

⚡️

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
