AZ Marijuana Sales Begin

Arizona cannabis sales begin!

Recreational marijuana sales have started today at some Arizona dispensaries. The newly licensed dispensaries can now sell marijuana to adults 21 and older. Adults can buy up to one ounce of marijuana daily from a dispensary, with no more than 5 grams being concentrates (extracts).

Curaleaf dispensaries, one of Arizona’s largest dispensary chains, has officially started selling recreational marijuana in Arizona. (View the map below for their locations.)

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to finally open our doors to all adult-use consumers and medical patients throughout the state after nearly two million residents voted in favor of Proposition 207 last year,” said Steve Cottrell, President of Curaleaf Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) will be licensing more dispensaries over the coming weeks. View list of licensed recreational dispensaries.

The state’s new marijuana law, Prop 207 (the Smart and Safe Arizona Act), also allows adults to grow up to six cannabis plants at their residence.

A 16% excise tax, which is similar to alcohol and tobacco, will be imposed on adult-use marijuana sold at dispensaries. Medical marijuana patients will not have to pay the 16% excise tax.

Item 9 Labs sells cannabis products to dispensaries throughout Arizona, and Bryce Skalla from Item 9 Labs said that “most of our stores (dispensaries) are using a multiple of three times in their ordering just to prepare for this.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
