The latest medical marijuana report by the Arizona Department of Health Services’ (ADHS) shows that Arizona’s medical marijuana program is booming during the coronavirus (COVID) outbreak. Dispensaries sold a record 18,083 pounds of marijuana (289,329 ounces) in May 2020 as they were deemed essential during the outbreak. Arizona’s legal hemp industry is also thriving.

The data below is from the report:

  • Medical marijuana patients: 245,533
  • Caregivers: 695
  • Dispensary agents: 7,302

The age ranges of Arizona’s medical marijuana patients are:

  • Under 18: 150
  • 18 to 30: 64,143
  • 31 to 40: 54,360
  • 41 to 50: 39,577
  • 51 to 60: 36,172
  • 61 to 70: 36,389
  • 71 to 80: 12,843
  • 81 and up: 1,899

Sexes of Arizona’s patients are:

  • Males: 144,282 (58.76%)
  • Females: 101,251 (41.24%)

The top 6 qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in Arizona:

  • Chronic Pain: 222,647 (90.68%)
  • Cancer: 3,780
  • PTSD: 2,693
  • Seizures: 1,182
  • Muscle Spams: 809
  • Glaucoma: 1,052

The top 6 counties with the most medical marijuana patients:

  • Maricopa County: 161,984
  • Pima County: 32,722
  • Pinal County: 15,153
  • Yavapai County: 11,586
  • Mohave County: 5,445
  • Coconino County: 4,664

AZ dispensaries sold a total of 18,083 pounds of marijuana (289,329 ounces) last month:

  • Marijuana flower: 16,270 pounds (260,333 ounces)
  • Marijuana edibles: 456 pounds
  • Other marijuana: 1,356 pounds

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
