Dispensary Phoenix

Phoenix police have shut down another illegally operating “compassion club” that was masquerading as a state-licensed medical marijuana dispensary.

The Green Thumb Academy was illegally dispensing marijuana to medical marijuana patients (and possibly to non-patients as well). The business was operating in central Phoenix for about one year. The Phoenix police got a tip in February that the establishment was operating illegally.

“When the marked police cars escorting the detectives arrived, several people who were ‘volunteering’ at the business attempted to leave, but were apprehended,” said Sgt. Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Detectives seized about 7 pounds of marijuana and $1,000. Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
