Customer service agents, or “budtenders,” at Curaleaf’s midtown dispensary in Phoenix, Arizona have voted 13-to-6 in favor of unionizing, thus becoming the first marijuana employees in Arizona to join the Cannabis Workers Rising movement.

“Today’s union election marks an important milestone for cannabis workers in Arizona and across the country,” said United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 99 (UFCW 99) President Jim McLaughlin. “Curaleaf workers can now negotiate a contract that guarantees protections in the workplace, and quality health care.”

Curaleaf, a leading international provider of consumer products in cannabis, was named on the second annual TIME100 Most Influential Companies list – an extension of the annual TIME100 list of the world’s most influential people – that highlights 100 companies making an extraordinary impact around the world.

In the United States, Curaleaf operates in 23 states with 128 dispensaries, 26 cultivation sites, and employs over 5,600 team members.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
