Colorado Cannabis Dispensary

Colorado dispensaries sold a record $114.3 million in recreational marijuana in March 2019. The previous record was set in August 2018 with $112 million in sales. Even as more states legalize recreational marijuana use, Colorado’s marijuana market continues to flourish.

Marijuana tourism in Colorado may be slowing as other states legalize marijuana, but sales aren’t slowing, according to Fox 31 Denver. So far, in 2019, Colorado has sold $386 million in marijuana, and it’s speculated that the state will set yet another sales record this year.

Peter Marcus of Terrapin Care Station dispensary said, “People are realizing that this is here to stay, it’s not a joke. These are safe, regulated places to purchase cannabis, so people who might have been unwilling or hesitant to get involved in the first place, are now seeing that it’s totally acceptable. I think that there were assumptions in the beginning, as to what this industry would look like in terms of its customer base. We’re seeing a whole variety of customers. One of our fastest growing demographics is older people.”

Marcus continued, saying that $115 million “in monthly sales, that translates obviously to tax dollars for the state of Colorado, but beyond that, those are people that are spending their money in stores, which means we can hire more employees, which means greater workforce development. As long as the growth is based on responsible rules and regulations that govern this industry, then of course let it grow.”

Colorado is well on their way to surpassing $1 billion in marijuana sales in 2019.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
