All mammals have an endocannabinoid system where the body produces endocannabinoids naturally. The endocannabinoid system aids the central and peripheral nervous systems in regulating the major systems in the body including mood and immune system function. The primary job of the endocannabinoid system is to help maintain balance (homeostasis) in the body.

Cannabinoids, the naturally-occurring substances in the cannabis plant, have many medicinal benefits for humans and other mammals. The two most well-known cannabinoids are CBD and THC.

CBD is safe for pets and humans. CBD products produced specifically for pets are either THC-free or contain less than 0.3% THC. Larger doses of THC should not be administered to pets.

Anxiety

Pets can experience anxiety for several reasons including separation from the owner, reaction to trauma and sudden scares. Anxiety can negatively affect their mood, temperament and response to situations. Administering CBD prior to exposure to a potential anxiety triggering situation may help your pet stay calm.

Seizures

Seizures can occur in any pet. Sudden surges of electrical shocks in the brain trigger a seizure. Nerves in the brain, and other parts of the body, can be damaged. Massive, recurring seizures may cause permanent damage. CBD is known to help stop seizures altogether or reduce the frequency and severity of them.

Inflammation

Inflammatory diseases like arthritis are common in aging pets. Some auto-immune diseases cause inflammation in major organs and systems in the body. CBD is a great anti-inflammatory that can help restore movement, quality of life and reduce pain in your pet. When your pet is able to move with little to no pain, it may also help improve its mood.

Immune System Health

Imbalances and ailments within the immune system may cause it to attack itself. This leaves the immune system weak and vulnerable. Your pet may pick up common sicknesses or allergies more than other pets, and this could be a reason why. CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to help regulate and strengthen the immune system to help prevent it from attacking itself.

Cancer

CBD may help inhibit cancer cell growth and production in pets. It may also help reduce tumor size. The ability of CBD to help kill cancer cells by stopping their “food source” may help your pet stop cancer. Using CBD may be a complementary treatment to other cancer treatments.

Nausea

Nausea can be due to illness or an ongoing health condition. It may cause your pet to become dehydrated, weak and malnourished. CBD may help alleviate nausea, allowing your pet to return to a normal eating routine and good health.

It can be difficult to give a pet medicine. CBD pet products are available in several forms including oils, treats and traditional hard food. Oils and tinctures may be the easiest to administer as your pet’s tongue will absorb the liquid rather quickly.

Contact your local dispensary to see if they carry CBD products for pets.
