Marijuana Reduces People’s Need for ADHD Drugs

ADHD

According to data, the medical marijuana use has been linked to a reduction in the use of ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) drugs in people diagnosed with the disorder.

Israeli researchers surveyed patients with ADHD who also had a medical marijuana card, NORML reported. The patients reported that their cannabis use reduced their need for ADHD medication.

The researchers concluded, “These results, although not causal, might shed light on the potential beneficial effects of MC [medical cannabis] on ADHD symptom severity and motivate future prospective studies in order to validate our results and perhaps even consider making ADHD an approved indication for MC license.”

The data suggest that people with ADHD could potentially use marijuana as a “substitute treatment” for pharmaceutical medications.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff.
