THCP

Researchers have found a new cannabinoid from cannabis that has far more potency than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the popular psychoactive substance in cannabis which causes a “high.”

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP) was found in a lab test to be 30-times more likely to bind to an endocannabinoid system receptor in humans than THC, the study, published in the journal Nature, reported.

The “biological results obtained in the in vitro binding assay indicated an affinity for CB1 receptor more than thirty-fold higher compared to the one reported for Δ9-THC in the literature,” the study wrote.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in a variety of human processes including appetite, mood, memory and pain sensation. Cannabinoid receptors, which are part of the endocannabinoid system, are located throughout the human body.

Numerous clinical trials provide evidence of the therapeutic potential of marijuana on a wide range of ailments such as anxiety, sleep, hunger, multiple sclerosis, migraines, autism and pain.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
