Marijuana State

By 2024, 20 states are projected to have legalized marijuana, according to Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics. They also predict that medical marijuana will be legal nationwide by 2024.

Eleven states have already legalized recreational (adult-use) marijuana, the Motley Fool reported, and at least 9 more are expected to pass legalization efforts within the next 5 years.

These are the 9 states where adult-use marijuana will most likely be legal by 2024:

  • Arizona
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Rhode Island

There could be a few surprise states, such as Florida, added to this list between now and the 2020 elections too.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
